Lunar Meteorites  (Mondmeteorite,

月の隕石, 月球陨石, météorite lunaire, la meteorite lunare, el meteorito lunar, Lunaire meteoriet)

(last update 01/16/2006 10:38 AM)

View a list of fine lunar meteorites:

There are less than 30 meteorites known to be pieces of Earth's Moon (lunar meteorites).

The total weight of all recovered moon meteorites is less than 6kg (versus e.g.: thousands of tons of high cutting quality diamonds are found each year).

Such these moon meteorites are really unique and precious treasures from space!

How are we sure our Meteorites are from Moon?

Mineral composition, chemical analysis results, isotope ratios, advanced optical studies, and textures of the lunar meteorites are all similar to those of samples collected on the  lunar surface during Apollo missions.

Certain ratios (An (90-99), Fe/Mn (ol) ~100) must match and of course the combination of all studies and compares with other lunar meteorites already classified must fit in a pretty precise range so science can be sure that this is a lunar meteorite.

Unlike meteorites originating from asteroids samples from the surface of earth's moon almost always contain free glass formed in space by impacts from space on the lunar surface.

For the same reason lunar meteorites show often explicit shock features (glassy veins and damaged mineral grains).

Because of how the Moon formed, lunar highland material is composed predominantly of anorthicite.

As far as we know anorthicite is extremely uncommon on asteroids and on the surface of any other planet or planetary satellites.

DaG 262 , Lunaite (Lunarite, Moon meteorite, Mondmeteorit )

A meteorite with nice fusion crust was found march 1997. Analysis showed that it was a lunar highlands regolith breccia . This lunar meteorite is of highest scientific value and outstanding rare! The total weight of all recovered moon meteorites is less than 5kg (versus e.g.: hundreds of thousands of tons of high cutting quality terrestrial gems are found each year) Such these moon meteorites are really .unique and precious treasures from space! DaG 262 is the most beautiful of all known moon meteorites : It has a fresh appearance , very detailed texture with explicit shock and brecciation features. DaG 262 is very colourful and rich in contrast . Exiting are the visible glass inclusions.
